Pikmin 4 | Games of the Year 2023

GamesIndustry.biz

A decade ago, I wrote a story for the USgamer calling Pikmin 3 "the greatest war game I've ever played." While USgamer is sadly no longer with us, that particular piece was moved over to VG247 , if you feel like reading the case for that. If you'd prefer the short summary, I loved Pikmin 3 because it illustrated the morally untenable nature of military command.

How is code documented in AAA games? They just put comments/summaries above the fields names explaining what it does, or they use separate programs that contains all scripts/systems documentation?

Ask a Game Dev

It really depends on the project. For brand new games, the best we usually do is in-game comments and maybe some auto-documentation because we're writing a lot of new code as we go and time spent documenting is time not spent writing more code. For established franchises and lifestyle games (e.g. Call of Duty, Destiny, FIFA, Elder Scrolls, etc.) that continue on using the same codebase, documentation of existing systems is more extensive and robust.
