How much do early/initial sales matter for the “succes” of a game? I often notice people saying that a game looks good but wait for a sale to pick it up. I understand that could be because mostly of budget reasons. But I do wonder if/how that affects developers/studios/etc.

The majority of a game's success comes from the size of its player base. Most games have a projected player count band they expect to reach (either via sales or free to play). I say band because predicting exact numbers is hard but it's more reasonable to expect somewhere between X and Y overall players. Every game has a minimum number of players it needs to reach in order to be considered a success.
