Game Classification: Defining AAA, AA, and III Games

At first, games were just games. Good games, bad games; big games, little games. Then came the rise of the AAA game. Suddenly a game either was or was not AAA. Inevitably, other classifications followed. In this article, we try to dig into what those are and what they mean. Along the way, we also propose some clearer and more concrete definitions for those terms than currently exist.

Tiles editor progress report #4

This is the part 4 of the progress reports about the TileMap and TileSet editors rework. You can find the previous report here. We are close to the end of this huge work. Hopefully in the coming few weeks, the Tiles editors should be ready to be included in the first 4.0 alpha. Some improvements still have to be done, but we are getting close to feature completeness.

Machinima?: Machinima is machine cinema incorrectly contracted, but is used to describe anything filmed using game assests. Obvious examples would be Red vs Blue, or even the South Park episode on World of Warcraft, “Make Love, Not Warcraft” There was even a CSI New York episode using Machinima, although it wasn’t as successful as the South Park Warcraft

A Lookback: Video Game Overlays and Localization

Long before physical instructional manuals were replaced in favor of in-game tutorials and storytelling, there was the overlay. The overlay; an almost forgotten accessory that used to be included with many games for second-generation video game consoles (1976 to 1992) like the Intellivision, Odyssey 2, Colecovision, and Vectrex. Overlays are thin, credit-card-sized plastic accessories that enhance gameplay by providing context, color, and commands by slipping over controller buttons.
