Godot uses clustered decals, so the cost is very low (the pixel is shaded only once and there are no extra draw calls for each decal). It is also possible to create local rendering devices, which run in the game thread (or any other thread). Still, it is possible to set a maximum (including fadeout) distance for the decals.
