Under what umbrella does a camera for a 3D game tend to fall? That is, is it more of a game design concern, art direction concern, or engineering?

Let's say that we're working on the camera functionality for in-game cinematics for a narrative-heavy AAA game like the Witcher or Dragon Age. The cinematic designers need a solid toolbox to build cinematics with, a set of tools that they will use to create most of the cinematics of the game.

A friend of mine wants to become a game designer without learning any other disciplines in game dev, he seems very sure this is possible but his confidence comes off as “idea guy” to me. I like thinking about design as well and how it could all fit together cohesively but I’m worried he’s setting himself up for failure by not learning another discipline to go along with it. Am I correct in this thought or am I being an jerk?

If he wants a career in AAA games, he will need specialized expertise. That might mean working on combat, quests, cinematics, narrative, itemization, UX, enemies, levels/environments, or any of a number of other specialties. At the very least he'll need to create his own assets and/or write his own code.

What is the hiring process like ramping up to production after pre-production for a triple aaa studio?

The specifics determine the kind of roles we need to hire - the cinematics team might need several animators, the quest team might need two narrative designers and a gameplay engineer, the item art team might need a VFX artist and a technical artist, and so on and so forth.

On the topic of cutscenes, do you think we will get to the point where fully pre-rendered cutscenes will be phased out entirely? Are there any other advantages to having a cutscene be pre-rendered rather than in engine besides the cutscene being “prettier” than the base graphics?

As in-engine rendering improves, AAA games will likely move away from pre-rendered cutscenes but AAA games are far from the only games that use cutscenes and have engines that can render high quality cinematic visuals (e.g. I don't think that we'll ever see pre-rendered cutscenes go away permanently.
