The main goal of my GSoC project is to completely rewrite the light mapper in Godot and, instead of a voxel approach, use raytracing to compute the scene lighting. I'm currently working on integrating Embree as a raytracing library into the Godot editor. These can only be dealt with manually while debugging.
If you want to try the new changes outlined below, you can use this custom build (Linux, Windows). For now, I have made custom builds including my changes for Linux and Windows.
