Solo dev Simon Taylor saw his game Smash Dungeon fail “The journey comes to an end”

PreMortem.Games

It’s a hard pill to swallow if you’ve worked on your game for five years, only to launch it to a largely indifferent audience. That’s what happened to solo developer Simon Taylor (working under the name Plastic Cow Games ) and his game Smash Dungeon. First week’s sales were 117 units. That’s a 4% wishlist conversion. After that, the game never gained any traction and faded away in obscurity.

Are video game consoles set for a bumper Black Friday?

GamesIndustry.biz

On the surface, it looks like it's been a banner year for video game console sales. Overall in every major market, video game console sales are up. PS5 sales are up over 100% in some European countries, while Nintendo Switch sales are incredibly up year-on-year, despite it approaching its seventh anniversary. But as is often the case, topline numbers hide some other concerning trends.

Blizzard’s Overwatch League was ambitious and doomed | Opinion

GamesIndustry.biz

When Blizzard announced the Overwatch League in 2016, there were plenty of questions about how the esports league would actually work – but at the very least, you couldn’t fault the ambition. The company envisaged city-based team franchises located all around the world, with each of the separately-owned teams – who each paid tens of millions of dollars in franchise fees to join the league – expected to build an esports arena in their cities, with the hope of attracting la

Single Player Elo Systems

Keith Burgun

This isn’t a full article, just something that I wanted to make a note about and talk briefly about. A bunch of years ago, I wrote an article about Auro’s single player Elo system. The Dinofarm Games website has been down for a few years now, but you can still read the original article here on archive.org. Since then, I’ve also implemented this system into my 2021 tactics game, Gem Wizards Tactics as well, and made some modifications (like removing forced-de-ranking).

Michael Blaker’s Retro Game Friday With Front Mission 3

Game Industry News

Hey all, I’m back with the third entry in a series I covered a while back for this week’s Retro Game Friday. It’s Front Mission 3. Plot: The plot and characters of this third entry are still dealing with a futuristic world that uses giant mechs, called Wanzers, in combat instead of soldiers for the most part. It is pretty good and while I won’t spoil it, I enjoyed Front Mission 3 more than the previous ones in this series.

What do you think of the “quality/love vs. money/hate” mindset to describe liking or disliking a game, its content, and its approach?

Ask a Game Dev

Henry Louis Mencken famously said "There is always a well-known solution to every human problem - neat, plausible, and wrong." The mindset you mention sets up a false dichotomy - that quality/love is the antithesis of money/hate, and that's incredibly short-sighted. the truth of the matter is that games of a certain quality bar must be profitable enough not only to recoup the investment spent to develop and market them, but more on top of that in order to cover the losses from games that we buil
