Gamescom 2023 to host record number of exhibitors

A record number of 1,220 exhibitors from 63 countries have registered to attend this year's Gamescom, according to its organisers. That's a 7% increase from last year, which saw 1,135 exhibitors from 53 countries visit the event following a two-year hiatus. What sort of advice could you give to a junior game programmer that is joining an ongoing project that already has a lot built. I am in a situation where I am finding a lot of things I am not yet familiar with. Assuming there is no documentation, is there an optimal way to familiarize myself the current project state so I can start working with confidence.

It's hard to say because the familiarizing depends a lot on how you learn best as an individual. Some folks do better with more formal training and documentation, others do better with jumping in and tracing code to see how things flow. Most will have a lot of questions as they learn more. I would say do the most that you can with what is available depending on the style of learning you favor (e.g. reading documents, tracing code, etc.) and then compile a list of questions you can't get answered
