I'm tired of dystopia fiction

Grumpy Gamer

Yes, I'm tired of dystopia fiction. A sentiment I probably didn't need to repeat because it's in the title, but I really am. Nothing points this out more to me than Star Trek. In a Star Trek vs. Star Wars internet argument I am firmly in the Star Trek camp and this is with eight years of working at The Death Star Lucasfilm (I kid, working at Lucasfilm was magical but I'm still a Star Trek person).

Deathloop deconstruction / design thoughts

Radiator Blog

SPOILER WARNING: this post spoils levels, main quests, and gameplay systems in Deathloop I guess this post is my contribution to Deathloop discourse. This is similar to my tactics games writeup and Enderal (huge Skyrim mod) writeup where I spoil some interesting game designer / systems design things. I don't discuss much of the game narrative. I assume general game design knowledge but minimal Deathloop-specific knowledge.

Hey all I’m back with the first entry in a Fantasy story I read a bit ago for this week’s Bookish Wednesday. It’s Lord of Flesh by Stephen L. Hadley! How to make your own game engine

Grumpy Gamer

At first I was going to just copy/paste his article and call it my own then I realized that is kind of a dick move. How to make your own game engine (and why) by Tyler Glaiel. Well worth a read. In my 35+ year career in games I've never used an off the shelf game engine. Starting with SCUMM I've always build my own. I love the power and the freedom.

Dreamcatcher: When All Your Dreams Come True in all the Worst of Ways

Game Industry News

HERE THERE BE SPOILERS. “ Dreamcatcher ” invokes a long-standing science fiction trope, including one with which Star Trek has flirted in the past. The episode doesn’t really offer anything in terms of surprises with respect to the trope, at least in this part, but that’s not really the point. The writers clearly understand that the real emotional core of the story lies in the fantasies each member of the Protostar ’s motley crew experiences and what it tells us about these lost kids.

Bong Joon-ho: the mastery of transnational directing

Filmustage

Hollywood rules the world of cinema. In second place, of course, is European cinema, which is a very different world with a unique film language. And, unfortunately, the viewer doesn't always dare to look into film territory outside of Hollywood. It's the same with Korean cinema. It seems to have been overlooked and for nothing, as it has given us so many cinematic masterpieces.

Twitter

Grumpy Gamer

I've decided to go back on Twitter but with a few changes: I unfollowed everyone. I will only post once (or maybe twice) a week. I only check twitter once every 1 or 2 days. I will only post positive things and mostly about game dev. I will not add rubbish to the Twitter dumpster fire. I used to follow 200+ people and now I follow 0. I apologize if I unfollowed you.

Synth Saturday: Taylor Varga Chapters 81-90 by mp?player

Game Industry News

Hey all I’m back with more of Taylor and Varga’s shenanigans for this week’s Synth Saturday. It’s Taylor Varga Chapters 81-90 by mpπplayer! Plot: This set of chapters continues the jaw dropping reveal of Kaiju’s reveal to the world and it’s utterly hilarious. I love this set of chapters, because it takes some very notorious characters in the Worm universe and hits them in the face with some metaphorical fish.
