So long 2023! Thank you for the great game dev stories

PreMortem.Games

On the last working day of 2023 we take one final look over our shoulder to see what we are leaving behind. This year was a two-faced monster. A stellar year for game releases, that’s for sure. But also a dreadful year for job security in game development, with a heartbreaking 10.000 layoffs. We look towards 2024 with a mixture of hope and fear, but also with a strong belief in the ability of people to bounce back.

As a game developer, what are your thoughts on “pay to win” mechanics (I.E. being able to buy more “power” in a game, particularly multiplayer ones, with money), both in business terms and in “fun” terms. Based on your “flow” graphs, it seems it would be a bad idea overall as the players facing pay to win players would fall into frustration area while those buying power would rise into the boredom area.

Ask a Game Dev

These sort of paying/nonpaying issues are typically ironed out by the multiplayer game's matchmaking system. Players often (mistakenly) think that matchmaking only considers player skill when distributing players into games. If player power (such as gear, level, paid or earned boosts, etc.) is a factor, I guarantee you that the matchmaking algorithm will take it into account because we don't actually want lopsided games - if we pit teams of equal skill against each other but one team has much hi

D20 RPG – Board

The Liquid Fire

In this lesson we will look at making custom boards for our encounters that are data-driven and skinned in a Tilemap. Overview My very first blog project involved creating mechanics for a Tactics RPG. In that project, I created a 3D isometric board with a focus on how to randomly create non-square boards including height information. If those goals sound interesting to you, then the original might still be worth a read and you can see it here.

It seems in competitive games with a healthy pro/esport community, balance is often different between the pro and casual levels. E.g. Class A tends to dominate Class B at the pro level, but Class B tends to dominate Class A at the casual level. If you try to make Class A relatively more powerful to make the experience better the majority of players, it will only exacerbate the imbalance among the minority of pros (which damages the health of the pro community). How do you prioritize/negotiate?

Ask a Game Dev

In such situations, it's important to figure out why professional players are able to realize so much more potential with a particular class/character/build/etc. while more casual players cannot. Generally, that means the additional performance must come from two things at the pro level - a high bar for execution (e.g. difficult timing or physical dexterity), and/or extraordinarily complex strategy that likely changes in real time (e.g. having a huge number of moves available at a given time and

Physics: Tween no effect on Collider?

Physics: Tween no effect on Collider? Am I right concluding that Nodes animated via Tween have no effect on Colliders? Specifically I have a node A with a boxcollider2d and rigidbody (type:static) and boxcollider2d set as sensor. I have another node B with rigidbody (type:kinematic) and boxcollider. Physics used in settings: Box2D Scenario 1: Node A with Rigidbody (type: Static); BoxCollider2D set as sensor Node B with Rigidbody (type: Dynamic) => Node B falls into the sensor area of Node A.

“Game critics” often talk about putting critical plot points in DLC, and then when they describe the story in said DLC it’s clear that the original game’s story works perfectly fine without them. But that makes me wonder where the story in the DLCs came from. Is it usually a cut-for-time-or-budget thing, like other early DLC? Ideas that came later (and if so, how much does player feedback affect things)? Ideas that the devs wanted to work in, but that would just clutter the original narrative?

Ask a Game Dev

Good DLC story content tends to be stuff that meets these general criteria: Is self-contained (i.e. the critical path of the core game remains a complete experience) Adds additional context and lore to the main game Is sufficiently large in scope that the players feel like they have accomplished something Has some fanservice for the core fans (Optional) These requirements generally mean that any ideas for the DLC can start from bits and pieces of cut mainline content, but often needs some signif
