Sign up for the GI Daily here to get the biggest news straight to your inbox After more than two decades as the industry's most prominent trade show, E3 is dead. Its demise is unsurprising (even expected, depending on who you talk to) but this still marks a significant moment, and one that saddens much of the games industry and the media.
In 2013, Daniel Macharia made the scariest decision of his life. He decided to leave his career in banking for video game development a month before his 25th birthday. Reflecting on his time in banking, he shared, “Everyone who had a technical issue in the office would call me. So the people who didn’t know me just assumed I was in the IT department and they were very surprised when they found out that I was in credit.
This article contains spoilers for events that occur within Alan Wake 2's narrative. I started 2023 not knowing who or what Alan Wake was, let alone that a sequel was on the way. This was a blessing in disguise, since I didn't have to wait 13 long, arduous years to discover whether Remedy's favourite tortured writer made it out of the Dark Place.
Over 4.55 million video games were sold during November in the UK, a drop of 3% over the same period in 2022. This is according to GSD data, which tracks digital and physical video game sales. The drop is due to a weaker release slate in November this year. Last year saw major launches including God of War Ragnarök on PlayStation platforms and Pokémon Scarlet and Violet for Nintendo Switch.

Europe posted a solid month for video game sales during November, driven by Call of Duty, EA Sports FC 24 and PS5. 24.6 million video games were sold across tracked European markets, a rise of 20% over the year before. However, this is because November 2023 was a 'five week' month compared with the four weeks of November 2022. If we just look at the same four week period, sales were actually down slightly by 2%.
A mirror. What fascinates me most about the video game industry is how, as huge as its grown, it lacks the institutions of other industries. Video games are a global industry with a massive and growing fan base that sells hundreds of billions of dollars of our wares a year. We can't stop pointing out that we're bigger than film and music combined. Because we're very insecure.

Writing my feature as this celebratory thing feels weird in light of that fact. Now, I don't engage with media for escapism mostly because escaping reality is 1) not a privilege for people like myself, and 2) real-life demands that I keep essential matters in front of my mind.

A lot of studios spend years making a bad version of a good idea – until they go and figure things out. It’s not because their ideas or team are bad – it’s because their development process does not have One Way Doors.
First, let’s agree that aesthetics in video games is the combined expression of sound, graphics, and design choices. In the following, we talk to Frederik Bager and 3D lead Anders Bruhn Pedersen about the latter.
It feels somewhat appropriate that probably the last big news story of 2023 is the final death knell of an industry institution. E3 is no more. After limping on in various forms for the past five years, before finally seeing its latest incarnation cancelled outright in May , the decision of the ESA to walk away from the show it created will come as no shock to anyone – but as is tradition at any wake, most commemoration of E3 has been about the good times , rather than about the distinctly

This article discusses a minor spoiler, an item unrelated to the main quest appearing in the game's Act 3. Read at your own peril. This is the least and most surprising Game of the Year piece I have ever written. Coming into the year, I knew Baldur's Gate 3 would be my Game of the Year. It's the latest title in my favourite franchise, following up on my favourite games of all time.
Unreal Engine , created by by Epic Games, is one of the most advanced tools for creating and rendering photo-realistic visuals and immersive experiences. This is needed to power the latest games and the Metaverse. Traditionally, such experiences required a thick client, a desktop computer for example, with a discrete GPU. Unreal Engine’s Pixel Streaming allows the running of Unreal Engine applications on a server in the cloud and streaming its rendered frames and audio to browsers and mobile dev
