Design review of Redfall by Arkane Studios Austin

Radiator Blog

I completed the main campaign in Redfall ( official site, Steam , also on Game Pass), a 4 player co-op open world shooter by Arkane Austin, who's mostly known for detailed single player story-filled action games. Cosmic storms and galactic monsters in Pastaspace Interactive’s Underspace

PreMortem.Games

The creator of the ‘open world lovecraftian spacefighter RPG’ Underspace calls it a ‘vast freaky universe,’ and even that might be an understatement. The Forgotten City (2021) revisited

Radiator Blog

Final Fantasys end with god-killing because that's what changing your life requires! Still, overall this was a very impressive achievement for just 3 indie developers. Planescape Torment's final boss fight conversation works because the god stuff is a metaphor for the protagonist's personal arc -- the final boss isn't god!

iHobo

In many respects, Final Fantasy VII and Bioshock that were mentioned in the context of the narrative motive highlight this very split: the Japanese took Wizardry and choose a form that prioritised the narrative motive for its storytelling (hence the 'animated movie cut with a game' that followed in the 1990s).
