The biggest pitfall is isolation, but that can be mitigated by being involved in a local game-dev community. I also used the local Game-Dev community to learn things I wouldnt learn otherwise. I wrote the prototype in a weekend and knew it was a Good Enough mechanic to explore. Thats what I did.
