Recently, I caught up with my old friend Jordan Smith to talk about where things stand and what the future looks like for gamedevelopers like us. In just the first half of 2024, over 10,000 gamedevelopers lost their jobs, according to GamesIndustry.biz (2024). Every single AAA studio is trying to copy that model.
Here's the main issue - gamedevelopment is expensive. AAA studios are expensive and cost a lot to run, assigning a AAA studio a remake/port project is not really worth it when compared to the estimated return on investment. First, it costs notably less than the publisher putting their own internal AAA studios on it.
So… for a moment, let’s put aside the fact that the purpose of a publicly traded company like most AAAgame publishers (Nintendo, Ubisoft, Take Two, EA, Activision, Sony, Microsoft, etc.) Getting a spokesman or celebrity to help sell your game costs money. Marketing AAAgames is expensive. No they don’t.
