Narrative design has always been an important part of video game development, but its significance in modern-day games continues to grow as narrative elements play an important role in player engagement and retention. Several exploration games also incorporate similar story designs. The core gameplay in Gossip Harbor.
I played Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. The charm of this game is off the charts and is the main thing that makes me love it. The charm of this game is off the charts and is the main thing that makes me love it. The “story” in this game is really just… very awful, I’m sad to report. CON: The narrative.
FINAL FANTASY X/X-2 HD Remaster is released on Steam, and the game celebrates two of the most cherished and beloved entries to the world-renowned franchise, completely remastered in gorgeous High Definition. In addition, different players reported FFX Remaster green screen cutscenes while playing the game.
The importance of the narrative depends primarily on how important the narrative is to the game. For a game like Overwatch, where the core gameplay is team pvp, the narrative is a lot less important and things like relationships are generally prioritized. If we can always make changes forever, we'll never ship the game.
As I’ve gone through the Final Fantasy series recently , it’s notable that the games used to have secrets, and now, they pretty much don’t anymore. Somewhere in the late 90s, and certainly by the mid 2000s, it was decided that secrets are bad and games shouldn’t have them. What are secrets in videogames?
This post is written by the fantastic Game Bakery substack team of Chase, Zixuan, Haiyin, Caitou, Fish, Amy, Chow, Jing, Wanzi and edited by Caitou, Rob. When we talk about MMO, many may relegate this game category to “old-school” or “niche.” When we talk about MMO, many may relegate this game category to “old-school” or “niche.”
So what we end up with, over time, is a “tradition”, or traditions within a blanket term like “RPG” There are so-called “ARPGs” like Diablo, JRPGs like Final Fantasy, CRPGs like Ultima, tactical RPGs like Fire Emblem, and so on. Over the years, I have loved games in all of these categories.
I just watched a couple of videos about sandbox vs themepark games (in particular one by NerdSlayer and another by Josh “Strife” Hayes )… One thing that struck me about the ways players often talk about this (because at this point the history is so old) is that people think of sandbox as the older version of MMOs, and themeparks as newer.
I completed the main campaign in Redfall ( official site, Steam , also on Game Pass), a 4 player co-op open world shooter by Arkane Austin, who's mostly known for detailed single player story-filled action games. In this sense, playing a 75% finished game is more useful than playing a 100% finished game. But not really.
Within broader game design culture, the theme also invokes an awkward aspect of cultural appropriation and reduction. On the other hand, why shouldn't our fantasy settings involve Mesoamerican and Andean influences? Instead I'm making a small level for a 25 year old game that no one plays. The textures are fine!
In the fiction, November 6, 2022 was the launch day for the game “ Sword Art Online ,” chronicled in the books, manga, and anime series of that name. Thanks to a crazy head engineer with a god complex, ten thousand players are now playing an ultra-realistic fantasygame in a virtual world with real-world stakes.
I would have played it sooner, but I was on this huge Final Fantasy kick (which is still ongoing, to be honest). This might have some very light spoilers, but… honestly, one of my main criticisms is that there isn’t much to spoil in this game, at least not in the 27 or so hours that I played. It’s awesome.
This is similar to my tactics games writeup and Enderal (huge Skyrim mod) writeup where I spoil some interesting game designer / systems design things. I don't discuss much of the game narrative. I assume general game design knowledge but minimal Deathloop-specific knowledge. Not that you should ever talk to a game dev.
Writing a video game with a good story is easy! Players will forgive your game for having a story as long as you allow them to ignore it." - Vogel's 2nd Law of Video Game Storytelling I recently wrote a blog post about writing good, clear stories that progress logically and make sense. But I'm a video game guy.

Magicabin is a relatively new adventure game, released in 2022 by Ivy Mobile. I first noticed Magicabin because of my passion for tycoon/adventure games.
