I then had enough time to focus on game dev, so I made the decision to start changing careers. I didn’t really think about what it meant to be a solo dev, I just focused on what I wanted to do which was learn how to make games. I knew plenty of software devs, even some that were making games, but they worked for game companies.

I aimed for a simple yet visually interesting aesthetic, using a 4-color palette for each unit or building and keeping polygon counts low for simplicity and performance. This lean asset pipeline allows me to quickly create and iterate on new art and models, which is crucial for small dev teams.”

I tried to respect the deep engagement of a fan, use the technical knowledge of a dev, and maintain the critical distance of an academic. Show how Quake community is surprisingly anarchist / radical -- they have complete control over themselves, from their social hubs to their source code to their dev tools.

Because the model has a huge number of polygons and we have to play at 60 frames per second. There are often thousands or even tens of thousands of polygons that go into a fully rendered model. With thousands of polygons potentially colliding, that can easily mean millions of collision checks every frame. You have been warned.

His English tweets can be a little difficult to parse though, so I thought I would offer my interpretation of what he said, based on my own understanding of game dev, the industry overall, corporate politics, and economic trends. The Soul and Tekken teams established a strong rivalry in the early days of the polygon game era.

1-Draw a polygon outline around the image: Normally for 2D animation, it's still more convenient to split the object into parts and then use bones on specific parts of them (as they handle overlap better) so actual use of this feature will be more of an extension to the existing cutout workflow. 4-Setup polygon for painting.

The CSGPolygon node is very convenient, a Polygon is drawn in 2D (in X,Y coordinates), and it can be extruded in the following ways: Depth : Extruded back a given amount. How does it work? Many cool new concepts are not showcased yet in demos either, such as scene inheritance or navigation polygons. waiting for Godot!

This cuts a polygon around the used part and packs it, resulting in considerably more efficient packing. Region takes up more space, but allows drawing only parts of the image, clipping it, etc. It also means that it can be batches. This mode is ideal for optimizing performance, as mentioned above.
