One of the changes I made to the engine was severing it from pixel art. It can still do pixel art, but it's better at doing higher res formats and I implemented Spine for character animations. Most of the TWP engine is now back up and running and my new experiments with UI are 100% in script and so far I'm quite please with it.

To do that we will edit the spaceship sprite by clicking on it in the project window. Then set the pixels per unit to 64 and click apply to update the sprites. So we need to edit those as well. Our sprite is 32x32 pixels in size, and it must be drawn at some position. For each pixel drawn to the screen, OpenGL will interpolate the outputs that were generated from the vertex program and use them to fill the triangle. This process is done in the fragment program (pixel shader in DirectX terminology). Fragment Program.

I use basic shapes, Boolean operations, colour gradients, and transparency as well as grunge images and pixel layers to create a detailed segment of a stone wall. Combined with layer blend modes like multiply or screen it filters out the backgrounds of the edited photos and leaves just the texture/ pattern.

Each system has increased from 15,000^2 to 24,000^2 pixels squared. Added some new NPC coms chatter, edited some potentially rude messages to be more civilized. Originally, the game was designed with only Roguelike mode as the default, with the additional two difficulty modes (Normal & Hard) added from beta testing suggestions.

I used to do my pixel art in Neo and general image editing in Degas. As I have chosen to scroll X by 8 pixels per scroll, this will scroll our on-screen text to the right. The EditAnywhere specifier allows these properties to be edited in the Unreal Editor, both in the Blueprint and the Details panel of the component. Godot uses clustered decals, so the cost is very low (the pixel is shaded only once and there are no extra draw calls for each decal). It can't be edited in-engine, but it supports shader variants using a custom syntax. Still, it is possible to set a maximum (including fadeout) distance for the decals.

Although raster (pixel based) occlusion culling will not be available until Godot 4, some geometrical occlusion methods are being added to Godot 3. Never be afraid to edit you game down if it needs it. You'd never do this in an adventure game today, but like pixel hunting, it was accepted. Every pixel had to count. The original plan was to have real game play and puzzles, but the game was feeling too big and we need to cut stuff. It will often be better for it.
