In the beginning, it was about respect. The video games industry in the 1990s didn't get any. Tom Kalinskie, who led Sega America during this time, recounts two stories that sums up the world's attitude towards gaming. The first came about during the famous 1993 – 1994 US senate hearings around violent video games. Kalinskie had been called in by his own senators to talk about the issue, and he explained how games are not just for kids.

Sure, I might be exaggerating a bit here, but launching a game in a state of negative user reviews sucks. Big time. Not only do they make other players think twice about buying your game, but if the user review score is really bad, like Mostly Negative orange territory bad, Steam will punish you with less visibility.

Supercell's Squad Busters generated an estimated $1.1 million on launch day, according to Sensor Tower. As reported by PocketGamer , the game also saw approximately 8.8 million downloads when the title released on May 29. Supercell also shared on social media that Squad Busters had reached 40 million pre-registrations at launch.

Games marketing veteran Michal Napora has announced a new publishing label, Unikat. Based in Perth, Unikat aims to support independent developers "who create unique and minimal games," with Tensori's liminal exploration title Pools and Voids Within's upcoming cyberpunk city builder Dystopika already on its roster. Napora is the founder and CEO of marketing agency 32-33, and has worked with studios including Bloober Team, Techland, and Frogwares.

A new development studio has launched in Barcelona, led by games veteran David Polfeldt. Called Bespoke Pixel, the studio is currently in the process of assembling its core team, and has raised $25 million in funding as reported by GamesBeat. Polfeldt previously worked at Ubisoft's Massive Entertainment for 17 years in various leadership roles, the longest serving as managing director from 2008 to 2021.

Mobile games made up 49% of total revenue generated by the global games market in 2023 at $90.4 billion, according to Adjust's latest report. Conducted between January 2022 and January 2024, the 2024 Mobile App Trends report found that in-app revenue for games apps increased 6% year-over-year, while consumer spending decreased 2% to $107 billion. Candy Crush Saga, Honour of Kings, Roblox, Royal Match, and Coin Master were among the top five apps for consumer spending, according to the report.
