2024 was the year of Microsoft's grand pivot | Opinion

GamesIndustry.biz

At the outset of 2024, the most often expressed concern about this year in the games business was that it was going to have a very sparse and underwhelming release calendar, at least compared to the spectacular heights of 2023. This was to some extent a ripple effect from the pandemic years: a backlog of delayed software made its way onto the market during 2023, meaning that with many major studios set to be in the early stages of new projects, 2024's line-up did not look very inspiring.

Solo dev Chad Crumbaker on his game Mekkablood: “Never thought it would be this difficult”

PreMortem.Games

For Chad Crumbaker (working as KRUMP Games ), it was the promise of full creative freedom that drew him into the world of solo development. I was an early adopter of Unreal Engine 4 and always wanted to get into game development, he says. Originally envisioning a role as a 3D modeler on a team, the accessibility of Unreal Engine inspired him to take on the challenge of crafting every aspect of a game himself.

Ascent of Ashes dev switches to Godot halfway development “Not as chaotic as Unity”

PreMortem.Games

Ascent of Ashes , the upcoming colony sim by Vivid Storm Interactive , has been delayed to early next year. While addressing player feedback certainly plays a role in the delay, the migration from Unity to Godot is an even more significant factor. Godot doesn’t feel quite as chaotic as Unity did at times. German indie developer Vivid Storm Interactive is a three person team that started when they launched a Kickstarter campaign for Ascent of Ashes in 2021.

Ask a Game Dev

Humans in general care a great deal about status - both having status and showing status. In real life, this can be through clothing, cars, homes, family, connections, the ability to get into "exclusive" places, and so on. In multiplayer games and online communities, it is just as important for players to be able to express their status. In one of the earliest sprite-based MMOGs I played, there were only a handful of different hair styles and no outfits, so players could only really express thei

Why do Fighting Games include invincibility frames for moves that are not blocks/dodges/etc? What is the benefit to having attacks have fractions of a second where the opponent cannot land a hit?

Ask a Game Dev

Invincible attacks are a form of counter play - opponents must keep aware when pressing the offense because the defender can use an invincible attack like an Uno Reverse card to stop the offense in its tracks. but only if that invincible attack hits. Attacks with invincibility are a much bigger commitment than a block or a dodge, because invincible attacks usually have a significant recovery and vulnerable time.

There's nothing particularly negative about leaving a project before completion compared to any other work experience. You won't get the bonus from finalizing and shipping the project, but it's not really a negative to leave a project partway through, especially given how volatile the industry is.
