The theming felt very fresh for Quake at the time, taking notes (and maybe a few textures) from Unreal. Why are these textures like this?! The texture theme is also a bit of an in-joke within the mapping community. There was gossip about whether McGee was being inflexible, or whether these Aztec textures really were so bad.

The two big changes I made were the texturing and the monster placement / player flow. One of my big motivations was to use Makkon's updated textures. Compared to his contemporaries and successors, Barragán didn't make a lot of buildings nor design huge cities. However, building these spiral stairs was a bit annoying.

A dev, Night by Night 00, shared his work on building warpable and wearable materials for games. Combined with the knowledge of the rendering, the texture is actually very close to the rendering vertex data. If I can pass this texture in between the direct rendering, then I get a 2D real fabric. can all be achieved this way!

Building the 3D model I used Maya for modeling. Then I unwrapped the low poly mesh model into three UV sets in order to get a good resolution of the textures. UV sets are the coordinates that map the 2D texture images onto the 3D model surface. They define how the texture wraps around the model.

With textures by Makkon as usual.) Building off of Taufner's solid blockout, I knocked holes in a lot of walls and ceilings to try to unify the rooms and give more breathing room, while ensuring they still played in roughly the same way. Taufner handled the initial blockout and gameplay, while I did the art pass and tweaks.

I liked the idea of climbing / descending a big weird tree, and building it in Quake would be a big challenge, so that's what I prototyped first. I wanted to emphasize the tree's influence on the landscape, and it felt less artificial than building walls or random cliffs. The two big influences for this map were Elden Ring and Halo.
