Michael Blaker’s Bookish Wednesday: “Fates Parallel Volume 02”

Game Industry News

Hey all, I’m back with the second entry in a Xianxia genre book series for this week’s Bookish Wednesday. It’s “Fates Parallel Volume 02” by Dark Technomancer. Plot: This second volume deals with the consequences from the last book, along with Jia and Eui growing ever closer and the machinations of powerful people. I honestly enjoyed this volume quite a bit, but there are definitely some stumbling points that are not as polished as the rest of the volume.

Projectile Deflection

Grid Sage Games

Ever since my first design docs from Cogmind pre-alpha, written back in 2013, I always wanted a projectile deflection mechanic. Like it doesn’t get much cooler than that, being able to swat away bullets or even send beams back at an attacker, or redirect them into other targets. Every few years I think about the concept again, and it finds its way into my ongoing notes in yet another location in some slightly-altered form or alongside some other content idea, begging to be implemented.

Several genres have gone extinct in the AAA space. Point and click adventure games, plastic instrument rythme games, and others are on life support like RTSes. What other genres do you think are next of being unprofitable at AAA production values?

Ask a Game Dev

I think it's likely to be regularly released titles that are in danger of slipping under the radar already, especially franchises that are losing steam. For example, I think fighting games that aren't Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat have little chance of AAA success nowadays. I think annual sports titles that aren't FIFA, Madden, or NBA 2K are slipping down there (e.g.
