AI NPC chat is like VR: probably cool but certainly niche

Game Developer

The “who hasn’t dreamt of having a real conversation with an NPC” discourse should remind us of the famed “who hasn’t dreamt of living inside their game” discussions we’ve had about VR in the 2010s. It’s a technologist's dream, but not something anyone will use.

Who (if anyone) picks up an auto error report when a game crashes? And does sending it (with screenshot or video) actually help?

Ask a Game Dev

That entirely depends on the team, the game, and the audience size. A 0.1% crash for a game with millions of players is still tens of thousands of crashes daily. Sending such reports generally helps (especially if you can add more context to what happened), but not always - in maintenance mode games, for example, there's often no one on the other end to read the report.

Does the shader have a built-in function to get the texture size?

Assuming you’re using the latest versions of GLSL, you can get texture size with the “textureSize()” Example code here… uniform sampler2D myTexture; // Uniform for the texture void main() { //Note: if you don’t specify a LOD, glsl will default to 0 automatically ivec2 texSize = textureSize(myTexture, 0); // Get size of the texture at LOD 0 int width = texSize.x; // Width of the texture int height = texSize.

Michael Blaker’s Movie Monday Featuring FernGully: The Last Rainforest

Game Industry News

Hey all, I’m back with another film from the 90’s for this week’s Movie Monday. It’s FernGully: The Last Rainforest. Plot: The plot is pretty blatantly advocating environmental responsibility, but it doesn’t get too preachy. In fact, that was one of the goals according to the producer Wayne Young. So, the basic plot deals with the animal residents of a forest called FernGully that is visited by a logging company, and things go to hell in a handbasket because the plot needed it.

I have a question about the 3D tutorial code

Cocos

Yeah, we don’t actually have to terminate statements… some of the engineers on my team do it for readability… but, if you do, use “;” or don’t put anything at all. The “.” after a number is to either specify a floating value or to signify that it is “.0” … nothing follows. Your periods that didn’t throw an error were immediately after an integer… so the computer read it as “.0” Ex. if you had let mynumber = 1. the computer would read it as 1.0… but when you put the decimal point after the parent

Spine Animations broken after Chrome update on Androids

Cocos

The issue has something to do with how chromium/chrome handles/was handling Uniform Buffer Objects. Obviously, it’s resolved now… but should this happen again, you can either disable webgl 2.0 until the issue is fixed (just remember that any scrolling textures that rely on “repeat” wrap mode must be power of 2 in webgl 1.0) OR you can try disabling uniform buffers in engine if you’re not using any custom shaders… but I really wouldn’t recommend this for a number of different reasons.
