Sandbox vs themepark

Raph Koster

I just watched a couple of videos about sandbox vs themepark games (in particular one by NerdSlayer and another by Josh “Strife” Hayes )… One thing that struck me about the ways players often talk about this (because at this point the history is so old) is that people think of sandbox as the older version of MMOs, and themeparks as newer. But that’s not right – sandbox is not the older form.

SheepIT - free render farm for Blender

DameDev.tv

SheepIT is a free Blender render farm that I've wanted to test for quite some time. Now that I've used it, I want to share my experience with you. The basic idea is very simple: you help in the rendering of other's people projects, and in exchange, other people help you to render. It's very easy to use, it's free and it has great community around it.

Why the Rings of Power Show Is Not Good (Part #7934)

The Bottom Feeder

I’m only ever in it for the memes. Wayyyy back in the 70s and 80s, science fiction/fantasy/superhero content hadn't completely taken over the culture yet. New nerd content was rare and treasured. The Superman movie (1978) was mind-blowing. (I’m old enough to remember when Superman was a good guy.) A new Star Trek series was an impossible dream.

Creating Brushes for Patterns along Lines in Inkscape

It’s been a while and I have quite a backlog of videos and tutorial material for Affinity Designer and Inkscape by now. I enjoy the creation process, finding solutions, and then recording a video or creating a quick tutorial strip. Sadly, I tend to neglect the website or my social media posts over it. There are simply too many interesting projects to cover… but I will try and catch up.

Why Renovation and Construction Elements Are Becoming More Popular in Casual Games

Game Refinery

Mobile game developers are constantly looking for new ways to bring in new players and keep existing players engaged with their games. One of the most successful ways of doing this is by introducing meta elements – gameplay elements and mechanics from other game genres – into your game. Over 70% of the US top-20% grossing casual iOS games now feature meta elements, whether that’s through the inclusion of platforming minigames or side missions with RPG mechanics, but renovation and construction e

Maintenance release: Godot 3.5.1

Mircosoft Game Dev

We released Godot 3.5 in early August, and like any release, there are few rough edges to iron out which warrant making maintenance "patch" releases (3.5.x). Such maintenance releases focus on fixing bugs and not on integrating new features. This helps guarantee that the overall production readiness of the stable branch keeps increasing. So this 3.5.1 release fixes a number of regressions that users reported after the release, as well as various other fixes to pre-existing bugs and usa

How VR changes how games are played

Yeah, a lot of my posts are VR-related these days. It’s how I roll, now. Not that all (or even most) of my gaming is in VR. I’m still retro-gaming regularly and I am really looking forward to the PC release of Persona 5 next month. But… VR is a wild and exciting frontier, and I’m still nowhere near jaded. While a lot of approaches and conventions have solidified for certain genres of games, there’s still nothing set in stone, especially as the tech keeps improving.

We can hardly imagine a more conservative industry than the film industry. For all its analogies, the process of filmmaking is endowed with many technological solutions that do not fit into the conventional framework at all. This can take the form of enchantments, prefixes, suffixes, or even randomized stats or different properties not necessarily reflected directly in an item’s name like the above list. The various possible combinations can really stack up and turn an otherwise limited pool of base items into a wider variety of interesting problem-solving tools, one that the player
