James Bendon always considered himself a hobbyist until he released his first commercial project, Dinkum. The game is an Australian take on Animal Crossing and really captures that laidback Down Under vibe. It took him five years to release the game in Early Access, and all that time, he worked on it by himself. But that’s just the way he likes it. “To be honest, I really like working alone,” he says.

(On the advice of my lawyer, publicist, and priest, I offer no opinions on the cover art.) Way back in the day, Dragon Magazine was the official magazine for Dungeons & Dragons (and occasionally other RPGs). I still have a pile of my old issues, and they reliably make fun reading. At the time, tabletop RPGs were very much in their infancy. Everyone was trying to figure out how to make them work.

Everyone has a favourite video game tutorial. Maybe it's the first hour of Fallout 3, which quite literally treats you as a baby, teaching you new mechanics at different stages of growth? Perhaps it's Half-Life 2's iconic tutorial that packs everything you need to know into four words and one empty can of soda? Whether you feel developers' fingerprints at the start of your virtual journey or not, tutorials are an essential part of the experience.

One of the activities that I strongly dislike is creating a User-Interface. For a long time, the first version of my game engine lacked a UI. The only reason it had one was out of necessity, not because I enjoyed developing one. As you may recall, my last blog post mentioned my interest in learning about BRDF. Thus, I ended up developing a BRDF renderer.

I don't get the emotional engagement with it much anymore. To me, there's really only two kinds of feedback - actionable and not. If the feedback is actionable - if it's actually within the realm of possibility to do - then we'll consider it, figure out how much work it will take, prioritize it, and put it in the backlog to get worked on if/when we
